Elder abuse is a serious, often overlooked issue that impacts a significant number of older adults across Canada. This online module introduces members to the various forms of elder abuse—including physical, emotional, financial, and neglect—while exploring the underlying causes and societal factors that contribute to its persistence. It also examines why cases of elder abuse are frequently underreported, including fear, shame, and dependency on the abuser.
Developed specifically for the Ontario Network of Victim Service Providers (ONVSP), this training is designed to raise awareness, deepen understanding, and provide frontline professionals with practical, actionable strategies. Participants will learn how to recognize signs of abuse, plan appropriate interventions, and respond confidently and compassionately in their roles as crisis responders or support workers. Through interactive content and real-world examples, learners will gain insight into the different forms of trafficking, common warning signs, and the complex trauma experienced by victims. The course also outlines appropriate, trauma-informed approaches to intervention and support—emphasizing safety, dignity, and long-term recovery.
This module is an essential learning tool for anyone involved in victim services, law enforcement, healthcare, or community outreach. Human trafficking often operates in the shadows, and many cases go undetected. By educating service providers and building community capacity, ONVSP aims to strengthen Ontario’s response and ensure victims are met with informed, compassionate care. Completing this module is a step toward being part of that solution.
